Wonder when we will see a game that takes control and use of all 8 cores of the Cell proccessor. Endfinal

never, because one of the cores is frozen

So that if one breaks, it's still a good processor and they can put it into a PS3 anyway. This way, they get many more good processors out of a batch.

So whats stopping the devs from using more than 15-20% power? Sounds like a lot of hogwash to me. If this was true, then the developers are puposefully making their game look like crap.xbox_daddy

It's not just as simple as saying "okay, lets use all the Cell's SPU's all the time!".  It's very difficult to evenly distribute X number of tasks accross 6 processing units, while simultaneously ensuring that the SPE's aren't stalling due to the latency of DMA transfers.

Or, I guess you're explanation makes more sense:  they purposefully made their game look like crap.

Redundancy.  The idea is that when you're making the Cell, you'll get a higher percentage of working chips if you allow one of the SPE's to be busted.

On a side note, I really hope this doesn't turn into the cows answer to "Gears only uses 5% of the 360's power!!!11!!!"

Yeah well maybe Sony should have held off on having that many different processing units until videogame developers were used to writing multithreaded applications that are handled across 2 or 3 cores, let alone 6,8, or 9.  Lets not even touch the fact that the dev kits sony provides is nowhere near as comprehensive or helpful as other platforms.

The programmers can handle it, the console is only half a year old.  I fully expect games like Heavenly Sword to show what the Cell can do.

Please.  The only thing heavenly sword will show is that the Xbox360 is capable of doing just as much, if not better (graphics wise) without having a Cell.

That's pretty cool.

But we shouldn't expect a game to fully utilize the PS3's power for a couple years....

Indiana Jones. I forget which one but you need to see those movies if you haven't seen them already. They are classics.

nope, 6 spu's cant do all stuff 2 general purpose powerpc cores can do.

bobogoeroeofog

Unless you have some idea what you are talking about..don't post. The SPU is just part of the SPEs to begin with and most in the industry agree that the Cell is considerably stronger for most tasks.

I read an interesting article claiming the processors in both consoles suck. The article was pulled long ago due to the author's fears of Microsoft tracking his inside source down. However, there's a copy of the article here:

http://forum.xbox365.com/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=66;t=000578;p=1#000009

There's also an opinion on said article here:

http://www.games.net/article/feature/102043/xbox-360-and-ps3-the-love-fest-is-over/

-Roger-Wilco-

Thing is...some points it mentions in there have already been disproven (such as the suggestion of the Cell not handling certain tasks for the RSX) the entire thing appears very speculative and the architecture was still largely unknown judging by how they are talking (they don't even seem to know much about either GPU).

If it was more recent I might give it more credence, but we've already seen developers offloading lots of tasks onto the SPEs and that will only continue. Don't get me wrong though..I acknowledge both have some major limitations and hinderances to development.

On a side note, I really hope this doesn't turn into the cows answer to "Gears only uses 5% of the 360's power!!!11!!!"Teufelhuhn

Since Lemmings use Gears in one way or another to counter everything I don't see why they can't.

Im just going to say "PS2 hidden power" and walk away.Cali3350

If you looked at all the early PS2 games its quite apparent that the PS2 did in fact have a lot of "hidden power".

whats the name of the movie on your sig? it it looks funnyc02z

Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark...BUY IT! Don't even both renting, rest assured its amazing..funny backstory to that actually, it was originally going to be a fight between the guy with the sword and Indie using his whip but Harrison Ford said that if it was him he would just shoot the guy.

So they cut out around seven minutes and put that in instead, as you can imagine the guy who was going to be his opponent wasn't very happy, having practiced weeks for it.

I think my IQ has dropped considerably after reading through this topic.

This might be the end of SW.

I've never seen this much trolling/ridiculous fanboy garbage being spewed before.

Great job guys!

If devs can use the Cell and RSX's power to the fullest. We would have photo realistic graphics. Since RSX is atleast 2x more powerful than the 8800 GTS.

And the Cell is too powerful to imagine so...

HarpoonArtic

lol, you should check your sources before sayng things like this.... id be prepared for incoming heavy fire of actual facts links and actual flaming

The Sony dev kit comes with a very informative manual for programmers. It reads "Yo n00bs teh cell got supercomputer flava word em up LOLERSKATERZ" if they can't make do with that then they have no right to call themselves "coders". Its difficult to get the Cell and its 7 SPE's to work properly together. Imagine a man with seven mouths asked to sing seven different songs in seven different keys then play the combined output through a single mono speaker so it sounds as smooth as a beach boys harmony. If everything isn't mixed just right before it hits the speaker it comes out real bad. Most programmers aren't Brian Wilson thus bad ports, no split screen multiplayer, and a lot of talk about "we are only using X amount of power because we haven't found enough programmers with 200 IQ's".
